Are you looking for the Career of a Lifetime!

Have you ever been sitting in the traffic on The East Link bridge on a dull, wet morning listening to the day's bad news on the radio saying to yourself there has to be a better life than this? Or are you a student looking at the different career opportunities and tossing many ideas around your head?

Well there is an amazing job out there which is literally under your nose and which almost anyone can give a go! It’s different, its challenging, it's fun, it's hard, it's rewarding, it's all the things you don't get in your normal 9 to 5! It is commercial fishing!

Your New Challange Awaits

It is a challenging but rewarding life and it’s changed. It's not all like "The Perfect Storm" or the "Deadliest Catch" but you do get to see things 99% of the rest of the working population will only wish for. Fishing is now a modern, safety driven industry with many opportunities to progress from trainee to maybe one day owning your own vessel!

But it's not a case of just turning up and walking onto a boat anymore. There is a training schedule and obviously safety is on top of the list. B.I.M. offer a complete range of training from safety, to net repairs, to engine maintenance to skipper's tickets and much more. Most people start off with an 'exploratory trip' and decide if they could get to like the occupation. Obviously some people don't take to it but others are hooked (sorry) straight away.

It can't be stressed enough that the industry has changed from the days when men stepped on board with little or no training, poor personal equipment and little prospect of career enhancement. Nowadays you only have to look at the modern trawlers in Howth or any other fishing port to see the change in the last 20 years. They are large modern vessels with 'shelter decks' (to protect the crews from poor weather at sea), digital satellite navigational and communication equipment, state of the art fish handling machinery to ensure optimum quality of the catch and an array of equipment and facilities on board aimed at crew comfort and safety.

Are you Interested??

Are you even a little interested? Ok, let's make it easy. 1st step, contact us here at Dorans Skippers Mate and we will give you an idea if what life is REALLY like on a trawler, none of that Hollywood stuff.

Have a chat with your partner, family and friends. Mull it (sorry again) around for a while and if you think you are willing to go, come out to Howth and have a chat with one of the skippers. This can be arranged by contacting Tracey Floyd through Doran’s Skippers Mate on Facebook / Mobile : 0862752784 / email : doransskippersmate@gmail.com..

If you want to go on an exploratory trip, we'll arrange for a short training and familiarisation session on board a trawler in port. Then it'll be the real thing. A short trip for a day or two (in fine weather) and after that it’s up to you!

If you like it, you can earn a share wage, depending on the amount of fish the boat catches, and then commence your training with BIM. Who knows where it will lead? One thing is for sure. You won't be shuffling papers around a desk or sweeping a store room waiting for the clock to tick around to 5 every evening. You'll have your crew mates, sea gulls, maybe even a few dolphins alongside and as the song says, "a good rolling sea" for company.

So, check it out, give us a shout and get your oilskins on. It might be the best call you've ever made.
